Graece Προβατικη, Piscina fuit dicta, Iohann. c. 5. v. 2. Ἔςτι δὲ εν τοῖς Ι῾εροσολύμοις ἐπὶ τῇ προβατικῇ κολυμβηθρα, ἠ ἐπιλεγομένη Εβραϊςτὶ Βηθεσδὰ, πέντε ςτοὰς ἔχουσα. Quod Vulgatus reddit, Erat autem Hierosolymis probatica piscina, quae cognominabatur Hebraice Bethesda etc. a voce Graeca πρόβατον, i. e. ovis, quod in ea mundarentur oves, quae pro sacrisicio offerebantur in Templo. Ita quidem Dominic. Macer in Hierolex. Alii ἐπὶ τῇ προβατικῇ, ad Forum pecuarium, exponunt subintellectô ἀγορᾶ. Beza tamen magis probat, ut legamus cum Theophylacto, ἠν δὲ εν τοῖς Ι῾εροσολύμοις προβατικὴ κολυμβήθρα, quam lectionem apparet habuisse Cyrilli et Chrysostomi exemplaria. Sed is hanc piscinam προβατικἠν, h. e. pecuariam, dictam vult; quod ex ea potari, et in eam mersari pecora solerent, vide eum Annotat. ad loc. Fuit haec piscina, quam a Salomone Rege exstructam et Stagnum Salomonis appellatam, ait Ioseph. de Bello Iud. l. 6. c. 6. miraculosâ aegrorum qualiumcumque sanatione, postquam Angelus statis temporibus descendisset in eam et aquam turbâsset, inclita, qua de re vide Iohannem c. cit. in seqq. Quod miraculum paulo ante christi adventum, in defectu Prophetiarum innotuisse, et in die Pentecostes, post largam illam Spiritus S. effusionem, cessasse, narrant Cyrillus in Ioann. l. 2. c. 125. et Tertullian. contra Iudaeos c. 13. Iosephus certe et Philo, qui postea demum scripsêre, nullam eius faciunt mentionem. Vide praefatum Macrum, ubi supra.
